Here's a look at the barn right after they bought it. No changes yet. Animals were kept on the lowest level, carriages on the next and hay on the top floor. This was a very typical layout. This is the streetside view. The last owner actually parked vehicles inside the street-level floor, but that would be excessive now.
So here we are about a month later (Memorial Day, '00) This view is from the driveway of the house, looking across the lawn.
Here's a look at the rough openings for windows on two sides of the building. The 2x4's are just as a safety measure to keep kids from falling out.
Another side view Here's Greg standing in the second floor central area. Behind him is a series of rooms, which will include access to the upper storage crawl space. John Schell is doing the work and it is coming along nicely.
The main beams will remain exposed in the majority of the second floor. The walls and all new 2x4 framing will be covered in drywall. The windows are nice and low, which will let in tons of light and allow great views of the surrounding area.
The only down side to the whole plan is the loss of this upper window. It's too bad the ceiling will bisect it. Another look at the framing detail.
How could I not take a photo of their Rhododendrons? They are gorgeous!
There will be more to come as the project continues. Stay tuned!
