Summer Vacation!

June 1999

We decided to stay in the US this time. Our destinations included the nation's capital and Ocracoke Island

Maria with the Sunset over Pamlico Sound

Unfortunately, I haven't yet scanned any but this one of the DC images, so for now, this is all you get. The scaffolding and cover were in place for the 2000 New Year celebration.

We spent a lot of time in the District. We went to the Smithsonians (Air and Space, American History and the Natural History). We also got to spend time with our wonderful friend Darian Lewis.(click to go to his web site)

After a few days in the DC area, we headed south to North Carolina's Outer Banks. Our final destination was Ocracoke Island. It was fabulous. This is the view from the Pamlico Sound side of the island, looking east to the Ocracoke Lighthouse, one of the four Outer Banks lights.

ocra9a.jpg (10945 bytes) We went on an ecotour kayak trip. Paddling in the Sound wasn't bad until some big boats went by. That was a little challenging. Not as tough as some of the whitewater I have done, but with no spray skirt, wetness was the rule.

We paddled to a marsh next to a large rookery where thousands of birds were living and raising their young. We saw some cool birds, but I didn't really get any good photos of them.

ocra4a.jpg (8088 bytes) Here's another view of another kayaking party as seen from "The Ditch", which is the channel into the harbor. I'm standing on the deck of the Miss Ocracoke, which we sailed on to watch Dolphin. Oddly enough, the only time we saw Dolphins was while in the kayaks.

Darian Lewis came with us for the first weekend on the island. His kite flying attempts got me interested in the sport. I will have to post some kite photos in the Summer '99 general section. I'll link from here once I do.

ocra7a.jpg (5894 bytes) The remaining shots are sky/sunset images. This one was with a wide-angle lens at sunset.

This image was near sunset, looking east. The beaches on Ocracoke have a brownish sand and very few people, which makes it perfect for my money.

Here's a similar image, but shot wider.

This one and the next are scanned from the same film photo. I changed some of the scanner settings to try and get the best match to the original. Neither is perfect, but I think both are interesting.

This one has more pinks and purples, but doesn't seem to have the detail. The image is pretty cool, I think. It was very beautiful there.

This is my favorite image from the entire trip. This is looking out over Pamlico Sound just after sunset. I love it.

We had a really wonderful time on Ocracoke. We did a lot of bike riding, kite flying, swimming and crab watching! The ghost crabs at night were unreal. you could hardly walk on the beach without stepping on them. I will have to add a few shots of them here some time.
This was a great vacation and one we will no doubt repeat. The house we rented was great and cheap. The fun was everywhere, people were nice and with sixteen miles of pristine beaches, you can always find a mile for yourself.
